Assumptions and data sources behind these numbers
Commute frequency, petrol price, fuel consumption, parking and ERP are all set in Settings & customization above (defaults: 3 days/week, $2.90/L, 12 km/L, $13/$24 parking, $1.00/$3.00 ERP). ~4.3 weeks/month is used to convert to monthly figures.
Home address is geocoded with OpenStreetMap's free Nominatim service. Driving distance/time comes from the free OSRM routing engine. Both are public services with no login required — if either is briefly unreachable or rate-limited, the app falls back to manual entry.
Public transport routing runs entirely in your browser using a built-in map of MRT stations across the North-South, East-West, North East, Circle, Downtown and Thomson-East Coast lines — no external transit API needed. It weighs each leg by time (not just distance), using dynamic transfer penalties: ~2 min for same-platform interchanges (City Hall, Raffles Place), ~7–8 min for deep interchanges (Dhoby Ghaut, Serangoon, Outram Park, Stevens), ~5 min elsewhere.
The router also checks nearby alternative boarding/alighting stations (e.g. alighting at Buona Vista and walking to Metropolis instead of transferring one more stop, or Mattar/Kallang for Geylang Bahru) and uses whichever combination gives the fastest total door-to-door time.
Driving cost = (fuel + parking + peak-period ERP + optional maintenance) × office days/week, with a small ±8% band applied to reflect ordinary day-to-day variability (traffic, exact parking duration) rather than a false-precision single number.
Public transport fares use Singapore's distance-based adult fare structure (≈$1.19 base rising with distance, capped near $2.50), with a small buffer since real fare bands move in discrete steps.
